A Small Town Sound

Hampton, South Carolina, 2011

DSC00907A small town sound
heard echoing from
Hampton Tire & Collision.
The sound
a tire iron
dropped on cement
next to a 1963 Buick
high on the hydraulic rack.

A block away
where people cross the lawn
of the Hampton County Courthouse,
it plays largely unnoticed–

And not heard at all
across the trees
in Columbia,
and not even a ping
in the blue skies
of Charleston.

Hardly anyone
is listening today,
on the edge of tomorrow…

But soon,
a train whistle.
